Description: I present to you Minola's Story
The test level. It is without storyline, cut scenes, NPCs and fighting Any feed back is greatly appreciated. I started this a very long time ago, as an attempt to join with :devgirlflash:'s <a href="http://girlflash.deviantart.com/art/Viviscape-v-0-something-47201863">Viviscape</a> and :devwestykid:'s <a href="http://westykid.deviantart.com/art/Nevermore-2-30222032">Nevermore 2</a> (both of which you should go and check out... after playing Minola's Story! ^-^). It had been sitting on my computer untouched for about a year now left behind the giants - namely UNI, so i figured I should at least finish off the level (to a playable standard) and upload here for you. ________________________________________ NOTE Although it may not appear so this game is incredibly graphic-intensive (also, I am not the best coder). Please, if you find it lagging reduce the quality from the buttons to the right ________________________________________ LOOKING FOR MUSIC Originally I had "Peephole" by System of a Down as the soundtrack to the town of VON (the town seen in this version of the game). I think the music fits with the atmosphere I wanted to create for this area (perhaps not the lyrics so much... more focusing on the sounds), but obviously I will never get legal permission to use it. If anyone knows of any similar ("Circus-ish rock" ________________________________________ CONTROLS W - jump A - left D - right Space - menu Curser - interact / attack Tip: Press jump, then left or right (straight) after. Tip2: You cannot land on pointy roofs ________________________________________ PROLOUGE "In a world of magik, mystery and oddity a great change (and not for the better) has begun its plague. The flat worlds inhabitants, creatures, birds, bugs and monsters and even the land is being infected and brought to its seemingly unstoppable will. The mystics, the wise, the wizards and witches foresaw all but none expected at such a time. Believed is the defiance of the sacrifice, a myth followed and practiced for all time until recent ages. The myth entails the world and its destiny. Such a flat landscape is mere logic - as a coin to have not but a head but also a tail, while unlike a coin, the two sides never to meet. The said curse is to be dormant if and only the first born child of each is thrown to its fate in the Pit Craverse on its fifth day of wake to the world. Generations of late with frail faith misbelieved such a prophecy to their dismay. An easier journey against the “old wives tail”, defiance and thus risk of the world’s fate became accepted..." Cake for anyone who "gets it" ________________________________________ Xbox logo © Microsoft. I only traced and animated it. Also "the feature" is obviosly a rip off and <b>just for fun</b>. Cake for the first person to... achieve the last one ^-^ (without cheating *evil eyes*) ________________________________________ Have fun... `kormyen
21 months ago kman I can't tell u how happy I am to see game design pop up on Artician, so I really hope you flesh this out and finish it. I played through Minola's story and Viviscape and I think I got the feel for the sort of environment your shooting for. I recommend putting a lot of time into your animations as the more lively your character seems the better the experience. Add animation when she lands on her feet, more movement when she's running (although i thought you did a good job here), climbing and most of all interacting with the environment. While I can see the pleasure from exploring, what your ultimately building here is a plat former, and running and jumping are on part of it. You don't necessarily need attacks though (as it was something you had mentioned in the opening screen).
As far as your optimization concerns, start with all your images. Watch your processes and figure out if your game is memory intensive or cpu intensive. Based on the amount of things happening in the game I would lean towards the former. In which case, using simple vector art might yield better results than bmp textures. You also need to watch when you create something, and destroy it. If your not already using clipping (culling) than you should look into that, since in this sort of side scroller it is easily implemented. Anyways, good luck and keep me posted. I'm off to GDC08 : ) |
